Almost three months into the new school year, Etowah’s new principal, Robert Horn, has been enjoying his time here and making needed changes thus far.

“My favorite part of Etowah has been the outgoing students and the great staff,” Horn said.

Horn has already taught at several schools in Cobb including Kell, Lassiter and Hillgrove. Horn noticed the impact his coaches and teachers were making on him as a high school student, so that is when he realized he wanted to be that person for students, as well. Going from teacher to principal was a gradual transition over the years of his career that included several positions along the way: teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal.

“My teachers and coaches shaped me as a person,” Horn said.

Horn’s first impression of Etowah when he visited last spring was that it was a very good school; some of his opinion was formed based off of the knowledge of a coach from Etowah he already knew. During his visit, Horn noted that some changes needed to be made. Students know these changes as the CCR bell, and the one earbud policy. Although the alterations may not be to every students’ liking, they are regarding their safety which is a top priority of Horn’s.

“I’ve been shocked about how easy of a transition it has been because of the students,” Horn said.

Horn treats his students the way he would want his children’s principal to treat his children and expects the same effort from the teachers. He strives to challenge them, hold them accountable and teach them responsibility. These are things that Horn enforces thoroughly in his workplace.

“Keep the students safe and get them educated,” Horn said.

Horn plans to give back to his community after his time as principal. He wants to be a part of an organization that helps those in need whether it be by donating or some form of community service.

“My brother is handicapped, so I am understanding of those with disabilities,” Horn said.

Horn has said on several occasions that he is not the reason for Etowah’s success as a whole; this is due to the students’ cooperation and the staff who teaches them. He is grateful for how smooth his transition to Etowah has been thanks to these things and is excited to continue steering the ship that is Etowah High School.
