Candy hearts, cheesy cards, red balloons, and people desperately searching for a date. For hundreds of years, people have used Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, as a chance to show appreciation for their friends and ask out their crushes. Some Etowah students find the day exciting and full of hope, while others think it is pointless.

Valentine’s Day is marketed as a special day for couples. Typically, sweethearts tend to give each other gifts ranging from flowers, to candy, to stuffed bears. Many businesses also have sales and specials on this day. Some restaurants in Towne Lake offer deals: Chili’s offers a $25 meal for two; Kani House serves many special dishes for two on this day.

“I think Valentine’s Day is a great way to celebrate one’s love for another,” Ivy McKinney, freshman, said.

For people without a Valentine’s date, there are still many ways to enjoy the holiday. For starters, students can spread love to friends and family by giving a simple “I love you” or “thank you” to those who make each day brighter. Others attach special memories and occasions to the day. Some families go out to dinner that night.

“I enjoy Valentine’s Day, even if I am single. It’s my sister’s birthday, so I am also celebrating her,” Rachel Jensen, junior, said.

Some students find the day to be a waste of time. There are many people who use the day as an excuse to relax.

“Honestly, I usually just chill around my house and watch some Netflix or YouTube,” Sebastian Piatt, senior, said.

In elementary and middle school, Valentine’s Day is a much bigger deal than in high school because many older students believe the day is useless and unnecessary. While some freshmen continue to anticipate the same excitement, others are tired of it.

“Valentine’s Day is boring, especially for lonely people,” Logan Haverkos, freshman, said.

Despite  a student’s relationship status, there are many different opinions of Valentine’s Day. Typical plans from the day range from extravagant presents and meals to simple days of relaxation.
