For many students at Etowah High School, their college ambitions take root in the classroom. For others, athletic skill forges a path to their future school. Even though it is still the first semester, some Eagles are already set to take flight from the nest and pursue their talents at a college level.
Katie Callaway is a Varsity Soccer player for Etowah, and her talent has earned her recognition from the University of Utah. Callaway endured a lot of stress from the recruiting process, constantly worrying she would not end up at the right school, despite working towards her soccer career for her whole life. She talked with many coaches but knew as soon as she visited Utah that the Utes were meant for her. She announced her decision to continue her athletic and academic journey as a Division One (D1) player on Aug. 18, 2022, her junior year, in an Instagram post.
“I definitely feel less stressed. I am graduating in December, so I can start college in January. I think this is the best decision for me, so I can acclimate to my new surroundings and get a jumpstart on soccer and school,” Callaway said.
Also committed his junior year, current senior Caleb Hughes is headed off to Southern Miss next year to continue honing his baseball career. In July 2022, Southern Miss watched Hughes pitch on a summer team and soon invited him to visit that September. Falling in love with the campus, he announced his decision publicly on Oct. 1, 2022. He will leave for school in July 2024 to get an early start on campus and begin working with the team. Like Callaway, Hughes expresses the stress relief that comes with knowing everything he has worked for has paid off.
“[I am] extremely grateful for my family, coaches, and teammates that helped me on this journey to make my dream a reality,” Hughes said in an Instagram post.
Cara Holland is yet another talented Eagle who is getting to experience reward for her dedication to her sport: softball. Holland began the recruitment process her junior year, with Berry College as a goal and personal favorite, and spent a year and a half sending emails, inviting coaches to games, and touring campuses. She had coaches come to watch tournaments and attended multiple camps for various colleges, earning herself five offers before deciding on her dream school: Berry College. Holland announced her decision on Aug. 26, 2023, giving thanks to everyone who supported her softball career.
“As far as school goes, it definitely takes a load off in terms of not having to apply to schools and knowing I will be going to my dream school before my senior year even really started,” Holland said.
Etowah continues to watch as colleges and universities chase the student talent that walks the halls on a daily basis. These three Eagles are just a few of the many athletes who are receiving recognition for their dedication and skills cultivated through years of practice and effort. Congratulations Callaway, Hughes, and Holland; the Talon cannot wait to see what is in store.
