Etowah’s newest addition ROCKS

The “spirit rock” has become a staple at many institutions that feed into Etowah High School, such as Bascomb Elementary and E.T Booth Middle School, and many felt that it was about time for the Eagles to receive a rock of their own.

“The girls’ soccer team decided a ‘spirit rock’ would be a fun way for people and teams to celebrate and promote events like birthdays or big games. We were very lucky to have Cherokee Stone Center donate the rock so that all proceeds are 100% profit for the team,” Katie Callaway, junior, said.

The Etowah girls’ soccer team first announced their newest fundraiser, a boulder-sized rock that could be rented to paint, on Nov. 4, 2022. Their Facebook page, Etowah HS Soccer, posted a digital flyer to advertise, along with the link that allows patrons to rent the rock. The “spirit rock” is located between the new gym and administration building on campus, and since November, has featured a send-off for the competitive cheerleaders and dancers attending their respective state competitions, birthday wishes, and much more.

“Show your school spirit! Rent the ‘spirit rock’ for 24 hours for $40.00. Celebrate birthdays, special occasions, school events, inspiration, class spirit, etc.!” Etowah girls’ soccer team said in a Facebook post.

Their sign-up genius offers a list of available dates one may choose from to reserve the rock for painting. Buyers are then able to access the rock from 5 p.m. on the day before their reservation to 5 p.m. on the day of their selected date. Etowah students or parents may also contact an established local artist, Danadoodles on Facebook, to decorate it for them.

“Seeing the rock painted for the dance team meant a lot to me and my team for many reasons, one being the fact that the school gave us recognition and support for the hard work we put in this season and showed us that out achievements do not go unnoticed,” Emily Ivers, sophomore, said.

As students park on the main campus, or cross from Etowah East to main, they are able to view the latest artwork and information on display. The basketball stands in the new gym may fill higher than ever before on a Friday night thanks to the rock’s announcement. Girls and guys purchase their tickets as soon as the theme for prom is publicized. Students become more connected with the reminder of a classmate’s birthday or local accomplishments.

“As a basketball player, I thought painting the rock was a cool and innovative way to spread support for us. It made me feel supported,” Ryan Tipper, senior, said.

Etowah’s “spirit rock” is an artistic and creative addition to student life and the campus itself. Rent the rock today to have an announcement present as soon as tomorrow.
