Imagine losing a sibling and then seeing him return in a matter of years—seventeen to be exact—then he says that the world is going to end in eight days. Crazy, right?  “The Umbrella Academy” on Netflix depicts the life of seven children all born on the same day with individual superpowers.

“I cannot stop looking at ‘[The] Umbrella Academy’ memes, and I also have a poster coming in the mail, so I guess you can say I am a bit obsessed,” Kimberly Pope, freshman, said.

Season One of “The Umbrella Academy” tells the story of seven gifted children who grew up in a private academy. The children were each born to women who were not pregnant at the beginning of the day. Sir Reginald Hargreaves, an adventurer and billionaire, persuaded them to sell their babies to him. He then created the Umbrella Academy to house the special children. As the siblings grow up and split off, they reunite once more for Hargreaves’s funeral. Shocked, six of the siblings meet their long-lost brother who returned from the future to warn them about the apocalypse. The only hope to save the world is for all seven to work together to save humanity.

“This show has a lot intertwined into it, so it is like a mouthful when only in the second episode, Five tells Vanya [one of the siblings] that the world is going to end,” Kiana Walker, sophomore, said.

“The Umbrella Academy” is based on a comic created by Gerard Way, former lead vocalist and co-founder of the band My Chemical Romance. The comic consists of three parts, Volume One: “Apocalypse Suite,” Volume Two: “Dallas,” And Volume Three: “Hotel Oblivion.” Even though there are many other writers. Some would say Way has to be one of the most popular.

“The writing was very good — very authentic to what Gerard was able to do with Five [a main character] in the comics,” Aidan Gallager, actor in “The Umbrella Academy,”said.

Many would say that this show made groundbreaking success. “The Umbrella Academy” is currently the top digital original series with over 45 million views. Some say this series is action-packed due to the diversity of the powers the children have, such as time travel, super strength, and talking and summoning dead people.

“This show is so successful. It has such a diverse plot. The way it is written leaves you wanting more every time,” Mariela Martinez, freshman, said.

Season One of “The Umbrella Academy” was such a success that Netflix has already announced the release of a second season next year.
