Most students dream of the day they graduate and leave school, but for one teacher, high school was only the beginning. Not only is this Biology and Earth Systems teacher  Ken Haughey’s first year teaching at Etowah, but he is also balancing his own academic career.

“I myself am actually a student,” Haughey said.

Haughey is working on his specialist’s degree from Kennesaw State University in instructional technology and plans to graduate at the end of the school year.

“I am looking forward to get out from under that, with cross country, teaching, and my specialist’s. It’s a lot to juggle,” Haughey said.

While Haughey is struggling to balance teaching, coaching, and being a student himself, students and staff members are struggling to pronounce his last name.

“It is pronounced like Chips Ahoy without the the A in the beginning of ahoy,” Haughey said.

Etowah appealed to Haughey due to the short commute from his home in district and the ability to teach more than one subject, as well as being at the same school as his daughter, a junior.

“When they offered me the position, I basically got everything I wanted,” Haughey said.

As a previous girls’ cross country coach at Creekview High School, Haughey plans to help revamp this year’s teams.

“The cross country team is very competitive, especially on the girl’s side. It’s a rebuilding year on the boy’s side, but they’re going to be great in the future. So, a lot to look forward to,” Haughey said.

For Haughey teaching is a learning experience, and Etowah is excited to continue learning alongside him.
