Pink, pink, and a little more pink
An imaginary place of only smiles, plastic, and the color pink has come to life in the new “Barbie” live-action movie, which is preparing to hit the screens and deliver a world based on every girl’s childhood dream. However, while it may be a story centered around a toy designed for little kids, excitement is building for all ages following a sneak peek that showed a bright, colorful movie that may just deliver a breath of fresh air from the bleakness and dreariness accompanied with many modern movies.
Releasing in July 2023, one of the new “Barbie” movie’s most alluring characteristics is that it is so upbeat and cheerful that it differs from many of today’s movies that are nowhere near as colorful or pink. The new “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,” for instance, may be similar to “Barbie” in the way it also surrounds a childhood story. But that is their only shared theme, as it is a bit on the darker side, characterizing the classic Winnie and Piglet as bloodthirsty and feral. The “Barbie” movie simply allows people to escape to the mystical Barbie Land and enjoy a movie filled with cheer and laughter.
“I like the idea of the new ‘Barbie’ movie because it is a different type of vibe with it not being cartoon anymore. I think it will be a very funny movie as well,” Kira Stevenson, junior, said.
Another reason that many are sharing their excitement is the fact that Barbie dolls have characterized both girls’ and boys’ childhoods for decades now, and this movie allows people to enjoy something they used to cherish very dearly as a kid, especially with the scenery and character outfits being designed exactly as they looked on the little plastic dolls. “Barbie” lets adults journey back to the days where they spent hours putting on fashion shows, creating doll drama, and bonding with their friends. If there were one word to describe this movie, it would be nostalgia. On top of all this, the leading characters, Ryan Gosling (Ken) and Margot Robbie (Barbie), only further appeal to the adult audiences who have grown up with these actors and have made them into some of the most beloved people in the industry.
“I am so excited for the new ‘Barbie’ movie because I grew up watching animated Barbie movies and shows and playing with Barbie dolls, so I am really curious and excited to see how they modernize the characters and the story,” Victoria Sprecher, freshman, said.
Though the trailer for “Barbie” was released on April 4, many are still completely lost as to what the plot will look like. People are taking to social media to make their guesses, leaning towards something related to “The Wizard of Oz” following a few easter eggs inside the short clip. Despite this confusion regarding the actual storyline, there is no denying that this movie will bring the crowd to tears with laughter, as it embraces the fact that it is a kids’ movie while also including humor for adults to enjoy.
“Even though it is girly, the ‘Barbie’ movie looks like it could be good,” Chris Laganke, senior, said.
Whether one played with dolls or with monster trucks as a child, the new “Barbie” movie is truly for everyone, and it is leaving audiences on the edge of their seats as they watch their childhood make its way to the theaters.
