Feeling despicable

Although it has been 12 years since the first appearance of the Minions, these funny, yellow characters have made a return of their own this year in “Minions: The Rise of Gru.” With a 70 percent rating on the Tomatometer, the movie does more than exceed a few critics’ standards.

The “Despicable Me” movies follow the life of the main character, Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) as he meets and befriends the Minions. Gru is a young boy in the newly released film, and the audience watches his rise to become a supervillain with his fellow Minions by his side. The Minions and Gru ultimately have a showdown with the Vicious 6, a team of villains who are the main antagonists of the movie.

“The Minions movie was awesome. It felt like my childhood all over again. The editing, the storyline, all together it was so good,” Carson Allen, senior, said.

The rise of Gru is not the only thing audience members experienced while watching in theaters. Many also saw the rise of #Gentleminions. The hashtag spread rapidly across TikTok and Twitter, which had teenslargely young menshowing up to the movie in formal attire. Even Universal Pictures, the official production behind “Minions: The Rise of Gru”, formerly recognized the trend in a Twitter post.

“To everyone showing up to @Minions in suits: we see you and we love you,” Universal Pictures said.

Videos and pictures advertising the trend grew rapidly and gained millions of views. Most theaters saw respectful teens in their style; however, some incidents of overly excited or rowdy crowds caused select theaters to ban those who showed up in suits.

“I can understand why theaters are banning it [dressing up], but it is taking away people’s fun and, honestly, at this time in life, I think we [teenagers] could use some fun,” Jamari Maxime, junior, said.

Whether or not one “Gru” up watching the “Despicable Me” series, the new film can be watched in theaters or on Paramount+. When in theaters, beware of the #Gentleminions that may join the show.
