Whether fighting personal health issues, fighting for her son who was born prematurely, or fighting in Taekwondo, Michelle Dufek does not give up.

“I have a recommended black belt in taekwondo. I have half a step left, like two classes. I could go back and get it if I wanted to,” Dufek said.

Due to multiple surgeries, Dufek was not able to finish and receive her black belt, but now her schedule is too full to make the time.

“I have always considered myself to be a fighter. I’ve had a lot of surgeries and chronic health issues. I’ve been able to come out a better person and learn from it,” Dufek said.

The math teacher never let any of her illnesses get her down. She loves being outdoors, especially hiking with her husband and son. Dufek also enjoys music.

“I like to sing. I’m in a KSU alumni choir. I sing whenever there’s music on,” Dufek said.

Dufek always knew she wanted to be a teacher, but she did not choose this career until later in life. She had a job teaching people how to use technology, but it was not what she wanted. After taking time off when her son was born, she decided to pursue her passion and  become a teacher.

“When I was a little girl, I would play teacher; that’s what I’d do for fun,” Dufek said.

Dufek has faced many battles throughout her life, and her next will be teaching Algebra I and Statistics.
