A taste of the future
Many Etowah students do not have plans after high school. They may be thinking about college, the military, or entrepreneurship, but not all know how to get there. The Media Center hosts the College & Career Café presentations on Wednesdays for students to learn more about life after high school.
“We want to help our students help plan for post-secondary opportunities,” Taran Smith, counselor, said.
Smith works with Cari Cain, media specialist, and Robyn Mattson, special education teacher, to organize the College & Career Café, that began last year. The presentations take place every Wednesday in the Media Center during the second half of all lunch periods.
“The whole idea behind the College & Career Café is providing information for students about all of their options, whether it be college, apprenticeships, or going right into the workforce,” Smith said.
Past presentations include University of Alabama, Georgia Army National Guard, Deals on Wheels, Kennesaw State University, and Navigating GAFutures.org. Those who presented covered information about applying to college, joining the National Guard, and staying financially stable while in college.
“We often have employers that are looking for high school students and colleges that are looking for high school students, and we wanted to provide an avenue for them to meet and get information to the high school students at Etowah,” Smith said.
There is no sign-up required; simply go to the Media Center during lunch. The next presentation is Georgia Gwinnett College on Oct. 6.
