A ticket to the sounds of summer

Students, faculty, and staff are beginning to make plans for how to enjoy all the wonderful spring and summer activities and events that are taking place in the greater Atlanta area. Among Atlanta’s offerings are rocking concerts and music festivals.

For those wanting an afternoon or night out, concerts are a great option. This summer, Khalid, Dua Lipa, Post Malone, and many other popular artists will be visiting nearby venues including the Infinite Energy Center and Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

For some fans, certain venues add to the experience of attending a concert. With the recent addition of modernized sports arenas to Atlanta’s list of exciting places, concerts this summer are being held in larger locations with more amenities.

“I definitely like to go to the SunTrust Park,” Drew Madsen, senior, said.

Madsen is drawn to SunTrust Park’s abundance of food and shopping options.

Some of the concerts happening around the Atlanta area this spring and summer include:

  • Beck, May 1, at the Tabernacle
  • Son Lux and Kimbra, May 14, at Terminal West
  • Khalid, May 22, at the Infinite Energy Center
  • Thomas Rhett, May 26, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium
  • Dave Matthews, May 26, at Center Stage
  • Dua Lipa, June 6,  at Coca-Cola Roxy Theater
  • Post Malone & 21 Savage, June 10, at Cellairias Ampitheater
  • Harry Styles, June 11, at the Infinite Energy Center
  • Zac Brown & One Republic, June 30, at SunTrust Park
  • Sam Smith, July 10, at the Infinite Energy Center
  • Weezer & Pixies, July 27, at Cellairias Ampitheater
  • Vans Warped Tour, July 31, at Cellarias Ampitheater

“I would go to Zac Brown and One Republic because I know most of One Republic’s songs and some of Zac Brown’s songs,” Madsen said.

For those looking for a weekend of music, food, and entertainment, music festivals fit the bill. Many festival goers choose to attend for the experience of seeing many artists, even those they are not familiar with, over just one.

“Usually they [music festivals] have food, and it’s a really cool vibe. You also get to discover new artists,” Grace Johnson, freshman, said.

Tickets for music festivals, although typically pricier than a single concert, offer fans more performances and entertainment options.

Some music festivals in the Atlanta area this Spring and Summer include:

  • SweetWater 420, April 20-22
  • Shaky Knees, May 4-6
  • Shaky Beats, May 11-13
  • Atlanta Jazz Festival, Memorial Day weekend
  • Candler Park Music Fest, June 1-2

Festivals tend to sell out quickly, so those looking to attend will need to make plans ahead of time. Other non-ticketed festivals, such as the Atlanta Jazz Festival are completely free of charge.

“I think the best of those bunch would be Shaky Knees because I really like alternative music,” Emma Harbin, freshman, said.

Coming up in April, Sweet Water Music Festival in Centennial Olympic Park features a line-up of folk singers and bands. Other music fans are gearing up for later spring and summer festivals, including Shaky Knees music festival in Piedmont Park.

Tickets for most of these concerts and music festivals are already available online.
