Help needed
Community service hours look impressive on college applications, and they can reflect on a student’s character. They can be done almost anywhere, and students can letter after 60 hours.
Not everybody knows how to get community service hours, so here are ten simple ways to complete them:
- Food banks, such as the Atlanta Community Food Bank, are always looking for volunteers, and it is a great opportunity to help those in need.
- Picking up trash off the road is also a simple way to be active in the community. Roads are always full of litter, and getting some fresh air is a bonus.
- Animal shelters always need volunteers, so get community service while playing with dogs and cats. For the homeless animals, this is a way for them to be loved and cared for.
- Over the summer, do community service by volunteering at a nonprofit camp, which offers a variety of activities. Whether sports, adventure, or arts and crafts camp, there is something for everybody.
- If being inside sounds better, try volunteering at a local library. There are activities from reading aloud to children to helping sort books.
- For those looking into the medical field, volunteering at a hospital not only looks impressive on college applications, but it is also an easy way to both get experience and give help.
- Cinderella’s Closet, a nonprofit organization, rents dresses, shoes, jewelry and other accessories. This a good volunteering spot for people who like clothes.
- A local Habitat for Humanity accepts help from volunteers who want to help build homes; the group also accepts donations.
- The school even offers opportunities to earn hours. The WACC, SWAE, JROTC, and teachers can help provide hours.
- There are plenty of opportunities within the Etowah community, such as Hidden Falls, a neighborhood off Bells Ferry, needs tutors to help children with their homework.
No matter what students are interested in, there are volunteer opportunities available for everyone. Click here for more information, types of community service, and a form to log your volunteer hours.
