Divide and conquer
What do you get when you add a group off motivated students, multiply by competitions, and divide by a love of math? The Etowah math team. The math team at Etowah is one smart group, packing a punch in both the academic and competitive worlds.
On October 7, the math team made its 2017-18 competitive debut. Returning members are continuing to master the craft of being the best math whizzes out there, and new mathletes are getting accustomed to the rigors of competition. For many members, competing is more about having fun than winning. Testing their own math skills and being with others who share the same passion as they do is a great way to spend a day.
“It was extremely hard!” Hunter Smith, sophomore and mathlete, said, when asked how the first competition went.
The mathletes last competed on October 21 at UGA. The team with their pencils and calculators in hand stayed sharp by doing practice problems and prepped by reviewing past material. Staying ahead of the game on all of the latest tricks and shortcuts is extremely important when it comes to competition.
“We’ve been putting in the work, so hopefully the results will show up,” Cole Dallas, freshman, said. Practice is extremely important.
Equations, calculations, buzzers, letter jackets. The Eagle mathletes are ready to divide and conquer.
