1 out of 5 stars for Academy Awards
The Academy Awards signifies the end of the award season; after 78 years, what could possible go wrong? Apparently, plenty of things. The 79th Oscars will go down in history as the craziest ones yet.
Every award show has its ups and downs, but this year, the chaos started before the show even began, when nominations were mixed up. On the Oscars’ website, Amy Adams was listed as a nominee for leading actress for her role in “Arrival,” instead of Ruth Negga being nominated for “Loving.” However, this was not the only mistake. Tom Hanks’s performance in “Sully“ was somehow added to the list making it an impossible six nominees for leading actor since there can only be five.
Then there were many little problems throughout the entire show. The host, Jimmy Kimmel, was accused of recycling a joke originally made by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in 2014. While Kimmel delivered his opening monologue, he poked fun at the stars. He made a joke about Andrew Garfield losing 40 pounds for his role in “Silence,“ saying that it was normal to lose weight for a movie. When Auli’i Cravalho was performing “How Far I’ll Go” from “Moana,” one of the flags that were representing the ocean hit her on the head. Also, during the memoriam, there was a huge mistake. Costume designer Janet Patterson was in the memoriam when she is still alive and well.
But none of these compared to what was about to unfold. It was the last and most important award of the night, Best Picture. Here is the background information: awards shows have a system: duplicate the announcement cards in case something happens. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were the presenters for best picture to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their nomination for “Bonnie and Clyde.” Beatty opened the envelope and was clearly confused. The card he was reading was actually the card for the leading actress category, so it read Emma Stone for “La La Land.” However, Faye Dunaway went ahead and announced “La La Land” as she only saw the movie title. The producers of the movie began their speeches. However, when they found out they actually did not win, the “La La Land” winners honorably handed over the Oscar statues to the producers of “Moonlight,” while a stunned audience looked on.
While this year’s Oscars ceremony was the weirdest and craziest, Jimmy Kimmel asked for forgiveness and joked about not returning to the Academy Awards.
