The debate over whether ‘Die Hard’ is a Christmas movie or not is an age-old one, dividing fans, critics and even cast members. Despite its unconventional take on the genre, overwhelming evidence supports the idea that ‘Die Hard’ is, in fact, a holiday masterpiece.
“Christmas is about surviving through the hard times and finding hope in the most chaotic moments; ‘Die Hard’ is the perfect Christmas movie,” Lillian Dawdy, freshman, said.
Released in 1988, ‘Die Hard’ follows alongside NYPD officer John McClane as he travels to Los Angeles to reconcile with his estranged wife, Holly, during her company’s annual Christmas party. However, a group of German terrorists led by Hans Gruber suddenly seizes the building and takes multiple hostages, and McClane is the only one to escape capture. Using his wits and resourcefulness, McClane single-handedly battles the terrorists, attempting to save the hostages and stop the terrorists’ plan to steal millions of dollars from said company. Throughout the film, McClane’s determination to reunite with his wife and his fight against the terrorists culminate into a high-stakes showdown, ultimately leading to the terrorists’ defeat and McClane’s reconciliation with his family.
“We had not intended it to be a Christmas movie, but the joy that came from it is what turned it into a Christmas movie,” John McTiernan, director of ‘Die Hard’, said.
From the very beginning, the film immerses the audience into the holiday season with Christmas decorations, festive music and references to the holiday, setting the stage for what it is: a Christmas Eve classic. In addition, the film’s main themes align with traditional Christmas narratives: reunion, hope and family. Moreover, ‘Die Hard’s cultural relevance during the holiday season has grown over time. In more recent years, it has gained a loyal following of fans who embrace the movie’s holiday elements. For many, watching ‘Die Hard’ has become as much a part of Christmas tradition as decorating the tree or exchanging gifts.
“’Die Hard’ is my favorite movie because it has cool explosions, police officers and lots of suspense. Even more so, I think of it as a Christmas movie because McClane is constantly trying to salvage his marriage,” Karsyn Cuppia, junior, said.
Even though ‘Die Hard’ is far from a traditional holiday movie, with huge explosions and reoccurring violence, the central message aligns with uniform holiday spirit. McClane’s struggle to save others-often at great personal risk-mirrors the selfless acts of kindness that many associate with Christmas. The ultimate triumph of good over evil coupled with McClane’s personal transformation evokes the kind of feel-good conclusion that makes Christmas movies so beloved. In the end, ‘Die Hard’ is more than just an action film; it is a Christmas movie for a modern generation. To watch the classic holiday film, click here.
