Whether it be a new bicycle with the cupholder attached or the latest PlayStation game everyone is talking about, many kids spend their holiday season thinking about what they want to ask Santa to bring them this year. However, this is not a luxury all children share; many are stuck in less fortunate situations where Christmas presents just are not really an option. That is why some organizations in the Metro-Atlanta area have taken it upon themselves to try and help in whatever ways they can with these holiday themed fundraisers.
Shop with an Eagle (SWAE) is a club within Etowah High School, where students and teachers alike band together to purchase Christmas gifts for children whose families are in tough spots. They buy them clothes, food and maybe even some toys before spending the day playing holiday-themed games and hanging out with the kids. It is definitely a day to remember for the kids. For more information, contact Mrs. Donell Osborne at [email protected]. However, this is not the most glamorous these fundraisers get, as that has to go to the next entry.
“I am so thrilled to be part of [Shop with an Eagle] and help kids who are in need during the Christmas season,” Maile Maebry, junior, said.
Each year once the season rolls around, thousands of lights and decorations are set up at Hobgood Park with the Hobgood Lights of Hope for the people to come and see. Though people do have to pay to get in, the money goes to the Anna Crawford Children Center, an institution formed with the purpose of helping kids who have been abused or neglected. It is very important as a community to help out those who have been put into situations like that; an easy way is spending ten dollars and going to see some pretty lights. “[Volunteering at the] Hobgood Lights of Hope does me way too good,” Brendon Gilmore, junior, said.
Encompass Ministries is an organization which helps individuals get back on their feet from troubles, such as passing of family members or being fired from a job. They too are holding a Christmas event where the proceeds are going straight to helping those in need. Just like the others, this charity is doing great things for the world. If there are any questions, visit here.
“I love Encompass Ministries and what they do for the world,” Lila Flood, sophomore, said.
Anyone finding themselves bored would be joyfully welcomed into any of these establishments. Not only is it helping people out, but it will surely be a good time. The Woodstock area is always ready for the giving-season.
