For the past year, Israel has been committing genocide in Palestine, with governments around the world working to declare a ceasefire. Now, support for a halt in Israel’s attacks is more unanimous than ever among the United Nations (U.N.).
For over a year, the U.N. has been working to find peace between Israel and Palestine. There have been many ceasefire attempts and proposals; however, the ceasefires were either denied or broken by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF). Currently, the majority in the United Nations supports Palestine. Now, Canada and Britain are the most recent countries to side with the Gazan people.
“We will likely witness Israel continuing to commit genocide crimes in Gaza and have to appeal to the UN Security Council to issue a new decision,” Lima Bastami, director of the law department at the Geneva-based civil society organization Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, said.
Over time, more citizens of these countries have come to side with Palestine, as well. With over 60% of United States citizens across the political spectrum pushing for a free Palestine, progress has been inevitable. The U.K. and Canada have both suspended their arms imports to Israel in protest to the genocide in Palestine. Britain even went as far as requesting a warrant for Israel Prime Minister Netanyahu’s arrest for committing numerous war crimes.
“It is tragic that anyone is dying, I think the killing of anyone is wrong, and it appalls me that our country is complicit in the death of any single person of any nation. I think it is important that we all strive for a peaceful world and remember no matter what race, religion, orientation or gender someone is, we are all just humans,” Alden Talone, sophomore, said.
Israel has committed and continues to commit various war crimes in their attacks on Palestine. The IOF has carried out multiple indiscriminate attacks targeting civilians, releasing white phosphorus and bombing hospitals, schools and refugee camps. In Israel’s efforts to bring home hostages and defeat Hamas, the IOF has killed thousands of innocent Palestinians, as well as the hostages they are thought to be fighting for.
“Multiple Israeli officers now tell Haaretz that it’s more than just an exclusion zone. Those officers alleged it’s a “kill zone” where commanders have given their reserve soldiers free rein to kill any Palestinian who enters, even children,” Chris Hayes, a reporter for MSNBC, said.
The world continues to push for a free Palestine, searching for peace between the two nations. It has been over a year since the start of the Palestinian genocide, and tensions are high as people around the globe strive for peace in Palestine.
