Matthew Renney is the new assistant principal at Etowah High School. Leaving behind coaching and teaching, his decision to go to Etowah allowed him to have more time to spend with his family.
“It was very hard to step away from teaching in the classroom and coaching to become an administrator. I do love that every day there is a new challenge and something different to learn,” Renney said.
Renney had to give up teaching and his coaching career to start a new chapter in his life of becoming an administrator. Nonetheless, Renney always makes sure to be available for his family and his two daughters. Giving up coaching allowed him to be more available for his family, since he no longer needed to be away training or games. Renney decided to go to Etowah because he knew it would be in his best interest to take this big step into a new journey.
“It is a lot to take in with the new position, but I am excited about the days ahead, and I am looking forward to seeing what God has in store for my life,” Renney said.
Although taking this big step into a new occupation can be challenging, he trusts in God to lead him exactly where he needs to be. Every day there are new challenges; even with them, he always keeps a positive attitude to be himself in his best version. Renney likes to go to church with his family, making religion an important part of his day-to-day life. To Renney, his family has the biggest impact on him; every night when he goes home, he puts his phone away to be more involved in his children’s lives instead of being sucked in by screens, missing important moments.
“I like to be fully present with my family when I get home after school. I feel that my family deserves my best while I am with them, and my daughters should not be seeing me on my phone constantly instead of being with them,” Renney said.
Renney has only started as an assistant principal this year. Even so, he plans to stay as an assistant principal and does not think he will get back into teaching anytime soon. As the school year starts off, Etowah High School welcomes Renney as the new assistant principal for this year and many years to come.
