Perhaps one of the most interesting artists in the underground, the rapper, song writer, producer and visionary Patagonist (Ptag) is determined to make a name for himself. Based in Chicago, IL., Patagonist has brought a unique sound greatly inspired by rap and hip hop from the 90’s and early 2000’s.
“I think Patagonist is really versatile and he is a really interesting artist, he always has a really creative concept for his songs and albums, I think the whole idea of his new ‘Villain Era’ is super cool, and I also like how he has his own sound,” Lucas Raber, sophomore, said.
Patagonist’s music ranges far and wide, each project having a distinct sound and style to it. Ranging from his project ‘P@TAGONIST’ that presents a sound reminiscent of early cloud rap, a sub genre of rap with a euphoric and dreamlike style, to his album ‘Naker’, an album that follows more in the steps of conscious rap, ‘Naker’ features more soulful production and more story focused writing; Ptag’s catalog is like a timeline of his life and his growth as an artist.
“I personally really like ‘Naker’ because of the storytelling and production, but it is also really fun to listen to his earlier stuff, I think he has one of the most entertaining discographies in the underground, he definitely stands out,” Alden Talone, sophomore, said.
Ptag always knew he would be successful, and although he did not always know what would come next, he stayed true to his art and let himself grow alongside the music. Patagonist treats his music as more than just an art form, but also as a tool he uses to grow as a person.
“I feel like I’ve grown through my music and like it has grown with me too. When you grow and change as a person, your music will reflect that. I know with my music, you can kind of hear my progression over time, and that also tracks my growth as a person too,” Ptag said.
After working for years to grow and develop as an artist, Patagonist has arrived in his ‘Villain Era’ with tracks like ‘HOW IS HE THE VILLAIN?’ and ‘VILLAIN ON CANVAS’, taking on a new sound along with a new theme. Inspired by his popular song ‘HOW IS HE THE VILLAIN?’, Patagonist is soon to release his album of the same title. His villain persona has only debuted within the last year; however, it has brought some of Patagonist’s greatest work.
“I did not know the whole villain persona would take off how it did honestly. People think I am trying to be [MF] DOOM, and he has always been an inspiration, but my persona is not the same type of villain as [MF] DOOM’s. My villain is about the perception of others and how you can be painted as the bad guy by other people,” Ptag said.
Patagonist is one of the most unique artists in the underground. Ranging from cloud rap to writing melodic narratives of perceived villainy, Ptag stands out in the underground rap scene.
