As the declining temperature raises autumn-loving spirits in the Northern Hemisphere, many have already started to take part in their favorite pastime: binge-watching comforting movies and television shows in preparation for the upcoming harvest season.
During the season, many begin to rewatch ‘Gilmore Girls’, a 2000s television production following a mother and daughters’ quippy banter in a small but heartwarming town. Fall-lovers claim the show has a comforting and warm aesthetic to it, even further characterized with autumnal decor appearing throughout the series’ many episodes. Additionally, ‘Gossip Girl’, a popular show surrounding rich teenagers’ rather immoral lives in the Manhattan Elite- the rich folk’s society in New York- attracts more attention as the weather cools down. Though many television series make their way back to number one during fall, ‘Gilmore Girls’ and ‘Gossip Girl’ are fan-favorites during the season.
“I feel like [Gilmore Girls’] color scheme and the soft, acoustic music of Sam Phillips makes up this comforting and warming feeling,” Corinne Thomas, sophomore, said.
As the leaves change from green to mustard yellow, crimson and burnt sienna, many tend to change their go-to picks for movie night into cozier options. For example, ‘Dead Poets Society’, released in 1989, is a heart wrenching yet extraordinary film following teens and their eccentric teacher discovering a love for poetry at a stuffy boarding school. Straying away from cozy and sad, however, some prefer to celebrate the season with fright night. Movies such as ‘Scream’, ‘Alien’ and ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ are terrifying and exciting for thrill-seekers, enriching autumn with a twisted Halloween taste.
“I like the thrill I get from being scared from [horror] movies,” Calib Rogers, junior, said.
Though mainly children enjoy less complex Halloween/autumnal shows and films during the chilly season, they are not the only ones who joyfully indulge in them. Given the sweet nostalgia surrounding said pictures, shows such as ‘Charlie Brown’ and ‘Scooby Doo’ are enjoyed by kids, teens and adults alike. Childhood throwbacks are a staple for many as fall rolls around, providing a warm and fuzzy feeling fit for the falling leaves.
“The Great Pumpkin [from Charlie Brown] really evokes why we all fell in love with the Halloween season and holiday. The candy, the costumes, but most importantly the mysterious nature,” a reviewer on IMDb said.
To most, autumn is a time filled with pumpkin spice and apple cinnamon scents, fun at haunted houses and adorable sweaters. As the trees shed their golden leaves and the bakeries fill with pumpkin and apple delights, the joys autumn brings is only intensified with amazing movies and shows, whether they be comforting, chilling or wholesome.
