As artists are finishing up their 2023 tours, many are moving back to the studio to create new songs in preparation for 2024. Megan Moroney, female country singer, has already released two new songs, “What Are You Listening To?” and “No Caller ID,” with “No Caller ID” taking the lead in many girls’ hearts and raising fans’ speculations of who the song is about.
In the past year, there have been rumors circulating that Moroney and Morgan Wallen, country singer, were in a relationship for a period of time, with Moroney’s first big hit, “Tennessee Orange,” fueling the claims. The song highlighted that she would wear Tennessee orange for a guy, and with Wallen being from Tennessee as well as a fan of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Volunteers, many see a clear connection. Furthermore, she confirmed in an interview that the Tennessee football shirt she posted in on Instagram was, in fact, Wallen’s shirt. Even though the song made it seem like the two were a great couple, their suspected relationship ended abruptly, as many believe that Wallen cheated on Moroney, resulting in their breakup.
“With all the points in ‘Tennessee Orange’ adding up about the rumors of the relationship, I cannot help but think it is true. With Morgan Wallen being from Tennessee and Megan Moroney confirming that she was wearing his shirt, there is just no way that they never dated,” Megan Busbee, senior, said.
As her new song continues to climb the charts, rumors have begun to revolve around the idea that Moroney’s song is directed at Wallen, this time about their breakup. “No caller ID” describes how she had been struggling mentally, and when she finally got back up on her feet, she started receiving calls from someone with no caller ID. Rumors began to start up that this caller is Wallen because in his album that he released in 2023, “One Thing at a Time,” he has a song called “Tennessee Numbers,” which explains that an ex-girlfriend will not take calls from any Tennessee phone numbers, leaving many to believe that the song was about Moroney.
“I think [‘No Caller ID’] is about Morgan Wallen because Morgan Wallen wrote in a song that ‘she quit taking calls from Tennessee numbers,’ and Megan said ‘it’s 3 a.m., no caller ID.’ To me, this is too clear that the songs are about each other,” Addison Bishop, sophomore, said.
On Jan. 11, Moroney revealed her release date for “No Caller ID,” and just a day later, Wallen posted a song teaser on Instagram called “I guess,” in which he expressed that he feels he is being blamed for a breakup. Many people believe the rumor that the song was about his break-up with Moroney, and it raised more theories when fans put it together that the teaser came out a day after her disclosure of the song’s drop date.
“Hearing about all the rumors between Megan Moroney and Morgan Wallen, I think it is very possible that Morgan Wallen’s new song teaser is about Megan Moroney. Honestly, it would be crazy to me if this was not about her just because I see how well the points are adding up,” Lucas Zustiak, freshman, said.
With neither artist confirming the rumors, fans are left to enjoy the speculations they have created for themselves.
