A “beary” superb performance
The Etowah High School drama department opened its annual One Act play, “The Curious Savage”, earlier this month. The show was beautifully written and balanced just enough mystery and comedy for any audience.
“The student cast and crew had a great time doing what they love, and the audience seemed equally as excited to be there,” Charlotte Forrest, director, said.
Preparing for their competition, the cast had exactly 55 minutes to move their props on stage, perform the play, then move their props back off stage. The cast and crew finished the show with only a minute and 37 seconds to spare.
“The Curious Savage” is about an elderly woman, Ethel P. Savage, whose recently deceased husband left her $10 million. Her three step-children, all upright public figures, send her to a mental institution, Cloister’s, where they continue to visit her only to ask where she is hiding the bonds. The comedic Mrs. Savage decides to send them on their own individual wild goose chases to find the bonds. In her time that she is with Cloister’s mental institution, she makes friendships that she will never forget.
“Each character has a distinct personality, and the show really wouldn’t be the same without them,” Forrest said.
Katelyn Chupp, junior, plays Mrs. Savage. Joining her in the spotlight, Delaney Stemmerman as Fairy May, Brandon Cali as Jeff, Jaden Jackson as Hannibal, Madeline Periut as Mrs. Paddy, and Abigale Montgomery as Florence.
“It was hilarious,” Amber Milam, senior, said.
The play would not go on without the backstage crew moving the props on and off the stage as quickly as they could. The tech crew also performed their best with lighting and sound.
“I think it went fantastic and is one of the best plays I have ever done,” Jaden Jackson, junior, said
The show has two casts, a leading cast and an understudy cast. The leading cast performed Thursday, October 20, and Saturday, October 22 . The understudy cast performed on Saturday, October, 22.
The cast and crew performed one last time this past Saturday, October 29, in the annual One Act competition at Cherokee High School.
