The Curious Savage
The Etowah High School drama department, directed by Charlotte Forrest, is performing “The Curious Savage,” for its one act performance about an elderly woman, Ethel P. Savage, whose dearly departed husband has left her ten-million dollars.
“I chose this play because I really enjoyed reading it, and it seemed like a show that my actors and technicians would be able to do an exceptional job presenting,” Forrest said.
The play was written by John Patrick, an American playwright. The first show ever performed, was on October 24, 1950 in New York.
There is a lot more that goes into a play than just rehearsing it. Forrest started looking at shows around April. She had to get the rights to produce the play, make copies of the script, design the sets, and find the appropriate costumes for the time period the play is set in.
“I think ‘The Curious Savage’ is wonderfully written, and I’m having a lot of fun being a part of it,” Ansley Cole, sophomore, said.
In a usual play, there are two acts. The cast performs one act, then an intermission, then another act, but in a one act, there is no intermission.
“They have worked really hard, and I have thrown a lot at them,” Forrest said.
This year, Forrest is trying different directing techniques. She begins her rehearsals with a production meeting where the cast reads through the play together. The cast also works together on specific scenes, finding out character choices, and working on movement.
“It’s super fun, and it’s a great show,” Adam Parbhoo, junior, said.
