Setting school records
The Etowah track team has been taking strides towards success this season and is continuing to set records previously unreachable. Coming off a severely shortened season last year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, track and field continue to set records and dominate the events they participated in thus far.
“I really enjoy running as I have been doing it for seven years [prior to her high school career](…) Overall, I am very happy and excited for my future accomplishments and years being a part of Etowah’s track and cross-country teams,” Abbie Kallereier, freshman, said.
In running events alone, Etowah track has set seven team records so far in the season.
“Breaking the 4×800 record was by far one of my favorite memories of the season and one of my favorite memories of the season so far,” Natalie Calbert, junior, said.
Long jump, high jump, shot put, discus, pole vault, and javelin are the events that take place in the middle of the field during meets. These events require rigorous training, resulting in strong friendships because of the amount of time teammates spend together.
“I enjoy hanging out with my friends every day at practice,” Jaden Field, senior shot put thrower, said.
Seniors Kali Terza and Caroline Pierce will continue their track careers in college. Terza committed to Kennesaw State University for shot put, and Pierce committed to Augusta University for running. Some senior runners have mixed feelings about the end of the season. With only a few more weeks left in their high school running career, many are trying to make the most of the time they have this season.
“It [the season ending] is definitely bittersweet, but it is exciting to be heading to college soon, and I am super grateful for the opportunity track gave me. It is crazy to think this is my last year on this team,” Mason Lawless, senior, said.
