The trend of thrifting
The shine lights, of bright and fluorescent, the feel of fabrics, silky and rough, the endless hangers lining the aisles. A sense of anticipation rises. Shopping at thrift stores and styling pieces of clothing to match one’s own individual style is a rising trend among teenagers.
“I started thrifting when I was ten. I used to go with my mom all the time, and it has kind of become our favorite thing we do together. We love finding random things and styling them,” Olivia Richardson, senior, said.
Thrifting consists of purchasing donated or pre-owned clothing and styling different pieces to express individuality. This type of shopping gained popularity from the influence of social media. Common apps students use for inspiration include TikTok, Pinterest, VSCO, and Instagram.
“I have a Pinterest board that really helps me figure out certain colors to match, and it makes my outfit choices cuter and more fashionable,” Kiersten James, junior, said.
There are a variety of thrift stores around the Woodstock area including NLB, Park Avenue Thrift, Goodwill, America’s Thrift Stores and Donation Center, Revive, and Plato’s Closet.
“I like going to the Goodwill off of Bells Ferry because it is pretty close to my house, and they usually have some pretty good items,” Jack Elsea, junior, said.
Something unique about thrifting is the wide range in prices. With the varying costs and types of clothing, individuals are able to personalize to their own style and budget. When shopping at thrift stores, it is rare to encounter the same piece of clothing twice, so it is vital to not delay when purchasing clothing.
“I enjoy thrifting because it is better for the environment, and it is very satisfying to find a piece of clothing that is unique and represents me,” Charlotte Luiña, freshman, said.
Whether one is experimenting with new clothing, or hoping to save money with a different style, there are limitless opportunities to personalize a look while staying up to date with the latest trends. For tips and tricks on how to thrift shop efficiently, click here.
