Through the trials of Winter Storm Inga, the Etowah Tennis team conquered tryouts and finally has started its new season.

“I’m super excited about this season and what it has to bring to my junior year. This is my first year being on the team, and I’m super excited to experience matches and hopefully create some new friendships,” Kristin Denmark, junior, said.

There are four tennis teams for Etowah:  Junior Varsity girls, JV boys, Varsity girls, and Varsity boys.

“My time on the Etowah Varsity boys’ team was really fun. We were able to make it all the way to state championship, which was a great experience, so I can’t wait for this season, and I’m very confident in us having a shot in winning state,” Christian Mueller, sophomore, said.

Coached by Billie Beecher, the team shares a tight-knit bond that propels its success throughout the season.

“Playing tennis was one of the best decisions that I could’ve made. I absolutely love Coach Beecher and each and every single one of my teammates. One of my favorite parts of last season was the Decoturf tournament that we went to,” Rachel Hugenberg, sophomore, said.

With a new year comes new senior captains. Emily Ayers, captain of Varsity girls, and Grant Williford, captain of Varsity boys, are more than thrilled to lead their team members for another successful start to the season.

“I am excited for a new year with a bunch of new talented girls. I love being part of a team and bonding with everyone while competing,” Ayers said.

Despite losing four starters, Williford believes the team is a contender.

“Right now we are 1-0 and are number three in the state, but once state comes around, everybody is good no matter who it is,” Williford said.

Both the veteran players and the newcomers are prepared to make the 2018 season the best yet.

“I am excited to see what the new season brings,” Hallie Albright, sophomore, said.
