As the cold approaches, most will find it difficult to gather up enough motivation to get out, let alone go on a morning jog. Even though summer is perfect for running, the winter air is a lot cooler. During winter time, it is grueling to get up from the fireplace and burn calories.

“To avoid the cold weather, I don’t go outside at all. Instead, I go to an indoor rock climbing place and do my exercising inside,” Matthew Collins, senior, said.

Fortunately, there are ways to stay active and avoid the chill. Before jogging, focus on the body. Watch the food choices, and eat foods that will help improve bodily functions and provide energy. Drink plenty of water, and take vitamins to ensure improvement in the immune system to keep strength up.

“To stay healthy during the cold weather, I drink tea and try staying warmer, like wearing jackets, so I don’t get cold and sick,” Laura Gentry, junior, said.

Next, find the motivation. The biggest issue with the cold weather is lack of incentive to get moving. Whether it is trying to keep the holiday weight off or getting conditioned for a sport starting soon, goals will help you stay motivated. Set a goal, and go get it.

“To stay in shape in the winter, I swim and run. I hope to get a scholarship for swim, and I run because it’s fun. Usually to stay warm, I wear a jacket, and my body heat does the rest,” Ethan Cintron, sophomore, said.

There are alternative ways to working out if physically getting up is out of the question. Whether the weather is too chilly or “just one more episode” sounds like a broken record, think of a way to work out without it being too tiresome. Learn some yoga, do a few planks, sit-ups, and push-ups. This way, you can get the job done without it feeling like a chore.

“In the winter, I like to stick to a diet and find in-home body workouts to avoid the cold and still stay fit,” Abby Madsen, sophomore, said.

To stay healthy and fit during the colder seasons, eat well, keep body and mind connected, stay motivated, and keep moving. The cold weather will change, and your body will,  too. With these easy tips, everyone will be able to get through the holidays and be able to start summer happy and healthy.
