Imagine walking in ankle deep water to find your home and everything you own destroyed.  The pungent odor of dead fish and rotting trash fills the air, and everywhere you look brings back horrific memories. Hundreds of families affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma are living these emotions, and they need to know that there is hope. That is why many clubs and organizations are getting together to help the people in the nation recover.

“Donation boxes will be set up all over Etowah, ET Booth, and all elementary schools starting around October 2,” Phillip Hutton, student leader of the Student Service Committe, said.

The boxes are sponsored by the journalism staff/Newspaper club and SSC. Staff-member, Kellie Little, set up posters about the donations boxes. The clubs are working together to collect donations for the victims of the hurricanes.

“You can help Houston by donating the follow items: gently used clothes and blankets, Band-Aids, toothbrushes and toothpaste, rubber bands, non-perishable food, and more items,” Little said.

The items from the boxes will go to a care package creation event the student services committee and ET Booth’s Fish Club is hosting on Oct. 18. Students can volunteer to help make these care packages, which will go to areas in Florida that were affected by Hurricane Irma.

“The care package creation event looks like it is going to be moved around Oct. 18. Absolutely anyone can go. It counts for hours and we love any extra help that we can get,” Hutton said.

The event will take place by the trailers or in the main lunchroom at Etowah, and students can bring more donations when they come. For more details of where to go and what you can do to help, talk to Mrs. Mason in room 7104.

“Sign-Up Genius will be distributed throughout the club, so you can join up through that. Expect a Twitter post on Etowah, and the club page coming soon,” Hutton said.

Etowah has many ways to help the victims of the hurricanes. Be sure to check for boxes in the lunch rooms.
