Spring into sports

Spring+into+sports

It is that time of year for baseball caps, funny tan lines, and a whole lot of practicing. It is the time of year where students go outside on a field, track, court or course to release their inner their inner athlete. During the spring season, some of the many opportunities here at Etowah begin. With golf swinging its way at the Eagle Watch Golf Club or Towne Lake Hills course, the golfers have been working hard each day. Along with golf, we have tennis. Tennis this year is full of young stars who have a bright tennis future, such as Josh Raab, Maggie Messerly and Rachel Hugenburg, all freshman.

The beginning of spring also marks the end of Etowah’s baseball season.  With the school’s varsity and JV teams, it’s no wonder Etowah has a 10-6 score this season and ten more thrilling games to come.  As the seasons change, you also see more sports outside, such as track.  With over half the team full of freshman, this season has made new and outstanding athletes. Along with the freshman, we have upperclassmen who have come back to continue their track career. With seniors, Chris Rinker on hurdles, Stuart Head on sprints and JJ Edwards on high jump, we have it all this season. Quamie Dawkins leadthe team in 100-200-meter dash.

On the green turf, lacrosse takes the field. Even though JV girls and varsity started slow, varsity took a big region win against Cherokee recently on March 29th. The JV and varsity boys lost 14 seniors, but have a rebuilding team.

With a team full of seniors, the varsity boys’ soccer team has a season for the books. Coming into the season, the boys kicked it off with a winning streak and at one point ranked top 5 in the nation. Alongside the boys, varsity girls have a young group of girls who are strong athletes and a significant contribution to the team. Riley Rose, freshman, is one of the top leading scorers on the team. Gymnastics has always been a big part of Etowah’s spring sports. In spite of several injuries this season, the girls are still on the road to state.

Come out and watch all the many sports Etowah brings this season; you wouldn’t want to miss it!
