As the temperatures start to get warmer and days get longer, athletes across the world begin to get ready for another track season. Track season is a time for athletes to showcase their hard work and dedication to their sport with various competitions, testing their speed, strength and endurance.
“I love track and always find a thrill in running; it feels calming. I have made so many friends due to track, so track season will always be one of my favorites,” Rachel Nixion, senior, said.
To some, track is more than just a sport: it is their passion that brings excitement, peace and friendships. The thrill of running, goal setting and accomplishments brings a sense of calmness and completion to many track team members. To many track runners, it is not always just about the race, but also about the journey and connections they have made along the way.
“I have never done track myself, but a few people I know do. I have gone to a few of their meets, and I love how competitive it is and love seeing my friends so passionate about track,” Luiza Carvalho, junior, said.
Many assume the sport is just running around a track and racing to see who is the fastest. However, there are many different events in track. An example of this is the 4×100 run, in which four teammates run 100 meters and pass a baton as they each finish their turn. There is also the 110m hurdles, which requires a lot of skill and technique for jumping and keeping a fast pace efficiently. Most athletes participate in several events throughout the season, though some choose to specialize in one event such as meter sprints or relays.
“I know there are different forms of track, so I think it is nice how it is not subject to just running,” Grayson Mirabelli, freshman, said.
Track meets take place in mid-Feb. to late April to determine which teams are going to the championships. Track, much like any sport, is a great way to meet and make friends, making playing sports more enjoyable for many. As the season progresses, athletes will continue to showcase all their hard work and dedication, making this track season one to remember. Each season brings new challenges but also memories, establishing track as an unforgettable part of life.
“I think track is a great way to decompress, and I really enjoy running because it pushed me to do my best and gave me a lot of friendships I will always be thankful for,” Lillian Buice, sophomore, said.
Track can have a powerful impact on a person’s life, not only physically but also mentally and emotionally. For many athletes, running becomes a source of stress relief and a place to focus their energy. Track also helps to build confidence and discipline, while also providing an escape from daily pressure. Track often carries far beyond the finish line, and for those who participate, the impact is unforgettable.
