Dystopian lovers’ dreams were fulfilled on Mar. 1 when Netflix announced that the entire Hunger Games series will be available to watch for March only. While the film was not originally on the lineup for March’s releases, Netflix used Twitter to surprise fans with the wildly popular films.

“Happy Hunger Games! Thrilled to announce that all four Hunger Games films — ‘The Hunger Games,’ ‘Catching Fire,’ and ‘Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2’ — are now on Netflix US,” Netflix said.

Since the announcement, the movies have all taken a spot on Netflix’s Top Ten list. By Mar. 6, “The Hunger Games,” the first movie, held the No. 4 spot on the list. The sequel, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” took No. 5. Finally, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1,” and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2” seized spots No. 8 and No. 10. The franchise continues to break more records 11 years after the first movie’s release, as it grossed over a $694 million box-office value.

It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what made ‘The Hunger Games’ such a phenomenon. One reason for its success may be contributed to the main character, Katniss. Katniss is an intelligent, capable young woman who flips the regular narrative of a damsel in distress on its head,” Cinelinx said.

Suzanne Collins wrote “The Hunger Games,” which became a best-selling dystopian novel that follows young protagonist Katniss Everdeen’s story. Everdeen and Panem (the fictional nation) citizens are forced to partake in the annual “Hunger Games,” a televised fight to the death between children ages 12 to 18. As the trilogy unfolds, Everdeen becomes the symbol for a sweeping revolution against The Capitol of Panem.

“I like ‘The Hunger Games’ because it has a wonderful plot of Finnick Odair, and as a youth, I loved watching the movies and reading the books, as it gave me something to bond with my mom over. I will be binging them for the month of March and watching Finnick Odair closely,” Alayna Roper, senior, said.

The first novel was adapted into a film in 2012 and starred prominent actors and actresses, including Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, and Lenny Kravitz. The movie garnered millions from its large success, surpassing the financial sum of both the Harry Potter and Twilight films.

“‘The Hunger Games’ has fascinated me for years, both the concept and the characters. I read the series before watching it and loved the writing and plot, and my liking only grew after watching the series. I am very excited that Netflix will be releasing the movies, as it will be great to refresh and rewatch them before the new prequel movie releases,” Madeline May, junior, said.

The series will be on Netflix for a limited time only, so be sure to watch them now. Happy Hunger Games, and ‘may the odds be ever in your favor’.
