‘Wrapping’ up the year

Wrapping+up+the+year

“Did you see that the Wrapped came out?”

Many might think this refers to some sort of gift or off-brand rap song, but to Spotify users, this is one of the most important questions posed at the end of the year. This inquiry is about Spotify Wrapped: the yearly, anticipated recap of a Spotify user’s music taste and preferences.

Reading your Spotify Wrapped is said to be a transformative experience. The recap includes the time a user has spent listening to music (down to the minute), the music genres that were consistently played, a user’s top five most-played songs and artists, and a personality diagnosis (such as the ‘Voyager’ for those who experimented with many music styles) based on the type of music a user has exposed themselves to in the past year.

“I realized I listen to way too much music, but I do think it is cool that you can see all of the stats of your music listening,” Evan Englade, sophomore, said.

You can learn a lot about a person from their music taste. Although music preferences are subjective, many students bond over similar artists or genres they enjoy. Students excitedly post their Spotify Wrapped results on social media and oftentimes forge connections with others solely based on their overlapping musical interests.

“I like my Spotify Wrapped because it shows me what music really caught my attention this year. It surprised me a lot because what I listened to earlier this year is slightly different than what I listen to now. I think people’s taste in music does not shove them into a certain stereotype, since anyone can listen to any type of music, but I do think it helps people empathize over common ground. I believe music is a form of communication, and someone’s music taste can say a lot about them,” Alicia Isenberg, senior, said.

Analyzing your Wrapped provides perspective on your music taste that can help you craft new musical goals for the next year. If you are looking to expand your musical options, reading your Spotify Wrapped helps you understand what genres you listened to the most and what types of music your playlists were lacking.

“I love [Spotify Wrapped] so much because it shows me how much I listened to all my favorite songs and reminds me of ones I completely forgot about,” Teaghan Hamilton, junior, said.

Stay in touch with your musical side, and be sure to wrap up the year with Spotify Wrapped.
