Five years ago, the life of Madeline Bernard changed forever.

“We were grilling steaks, and all of a sudden, they were fuel to an enormous fire,” Bernard said.

The family went inside to watch a movie when they heard a loud noise from the back deck, and they went to go check what it was.

Bernard’s family saw the grill in flames because the propane tank had leaked. Her mother called the fire department, but when they got there, flames had completely engulfed the house.

“It all happened so fast; it was so surreal,” Bernard said.

The family got out of the house just in time before 70-foot flames flared up. The smell of smoke traveled all throughout the neighborhood.

“We moved to a better house with a better school system. We also learned to appreciate things more,” Bernard said.
